Music of Brixton - Yezzi Yezzir
February 16, 2023
Brixton and South London is full of incredible artists, musicians and institutions. This series is an opportunity to get out there, see what people are up to and promote the talent we have in our backyard.
Yezzi Yezzir – “Music has the power to evoke emotion and soothes your soul when nothing else can. It truly is a blessing to be able to create music as well as enjoy it.”
Yezzi is a local to Brixton who’s name has appeared more and more over the last couple of years - establishing her as one of the most exciting emerging rappers and artists in South London. Yezzi’s unique style is a product of her early music discovery, delving into what she describes as the “raw and unapologetic” sound from 80s/90s Hip Hop and R&B; an era where we were gifted Eve, Missy Elliot, Queen Latifa, Lauryn Hill, Mary J Blige and more. What we see and hear today with Yezzi, is an intelligent music producer and lyricist with a fantastic music taste.
Her productions tell a story from the women’s perspective; boasting punchy basslines with lyrics that convey powerful messages. Yezzi believes when artists unveil their vulnerabilities that allows listeners to connect to the music and artist on a deeper level. Alongside her music production, Yezzi hosts a show on Radio Westside (89.6FM) and is the executive producer of the podcast ‘Hey Sis’ with @a_yofficial – she is using these platforms to explore topics close to her heart.
A highlight for Yezzi in 2022 was her summer collaboration with Brixton Chamber Orchestra where she became their first female rapper on the tour. This opportunity allowed Yezzi to step out of her comfort zone and express the synergy between classical and modern music to multiple communities around South London.
