Mangoes to Lagos
June 13, 2024
We go way back (in craft beer terms) with Nigeria-based Bature Brewery. They first got in touch about 8 years ago when we were still in our railway arch brewery. We were a bit further along in our journey than they were, so we invited them for a visit. We exchanged info, gossip and trade chat, as you do. We even hosted a party for them at our taproom, where they invited members of the Nigerian diaspora, family, friends and their early backers. We kept in touch and loved hearing about the adventures and challenges of building West Africa’s first craft brewery and capturing the spirit of Naija (BBC News - Nigeria at 50: What does Naija mean?).
We’ve watched with admiration and pride as Bature has grown into a successful community-based, environmentally-focussed, partially employee-owned brewery and taproom producing fantastic beers and making use of local ingredients, influences and designs whenever possible. It was an experience different to our own, but recognisable enough that we’ve always considered them to be our cousins in Nigeria. Both breweries were inspired by places defined by bustle, vibrance and irrepressible energy, and of course, we share the letter B prominently on our branding!
We had long talked about a collab between our two breweries but were both too busy building our businesses and keeping up with demand. After a recent visit from Bature, we decided to finally make it happen. The result is Mangoes to Lagos Tropical Pale Ale. The recipe is a cross-continental mash-up of our Mangoes to Brixton and their Mango Disco Juice. As well as lashings of juicy, sweet mango, it includes sorghum, a native African grain Bature uses in its recipes, which adds body and flavour.
The beer takes inspiration from the abundant fresh mangoes piled high in the markets of both places and transports you with a taste of sunshine and good times from West Africa to South London and beyond!
Join us for the Brixton x Bature Mangoes to Lagos launch party on Thursday 20th June 5 pm.
We’ll be pairing the beer with a taste of Nigerian food and Afrobeats tunes.
